Don't have the VIN? Search by year, make and model
What you get for free
- Vehicle details. Make, model, year, trim, engine, body style and assembly plant, decoded from the VIN.
- Recalls issued for its model. Each recall explained in plain language, with a link to confirm on NHTSA whether YOUR car was already repaired.
- Complaints and safety. How many complaints other owners filed, which parts fail most, and NCAP safety stars.
- Next steps. A free link to NICB to check theft records and a list of questions for the seller.
What it does NOT include (and we won't pretend it does)
A free check doesn't show accidents, salvage or flood titles, odometer rollbacks or number of owners. That requires a paid vehicle history report. We explain the difference clearly.

Frequently asked questions
Is it really free?
Yes. VIN decoding, recalls issued for the model, complaints and safety ratings are free with no sign-up. We do not offer a "free full report": accident, title and mileage history is a paid third-party report.
Does this tell me if MY car has open recalls?
Not exactly. NHTSA's public data reports recalls by make, model and year. To know whether your specific car has been repaired, use the button that takes you to NHTSA with your VIN — it's free and official.
Where do I find the VIN?
On the driver-side dashboard (visible through the windshield), on the sticker in the driver's door frame, on the title, the registration and the insurance card. It has 17 characters and never uses the letters I, O or Q.
Do you store my data?
We don't ask for your name, email or phone. We cache the technical VIN data to respond faster. We don't use tracking cookies.
Can you tell me who owns the car?
No. Federal law (DPPA) protects personal information in motor vehicle records and we don't offer that kind of search.
How do I know if the car is stolen?
You can check for free on NICB VINCheck, the insurance industry database. We link to it in every result.
