What an extended car warranty covers and when it makes sense

Author: Mariano · Last updated:

What people call an “extended warranty” is almost always a vehicle service contract: a separate product you pay for to cover certain repairs for a period of time or mileage. The FTC clarifies that, legally, it isn’t a warranty: a warranty comes with the price of the car; a service contract is bought separately.

They’re sold by manufacturers, dealers and independent companies.

What it can cover

It depends entirely on the contract. There are several types:

They almost never cover: maintenance (oil, brakes, tires), wear items, crash damage or misuse, and problems the car already had.

What to check before signing

According to the FTC, ask and read:

  1. Does it duplicate coverage you already have? If the car is still under factory warranty, you may be paying twice.
  2. When does it start? Some contracts kick in only when the factory warranty ends.
  3. What exactly does it cover and exclude? Ask for the full contract, not a brochure.
  4. Is there a deductible? Per visit or per repair?
  5. Where can repairs be done? Only at the selling dealer, or any shop?
  6. Does it cover towing and rental cars?
  7. Who pays for repairs? The seller or an “administrator”. Check their reputation.
  8. Can you cancel and get a refund? With what fee?
  9. What maintenance is required and how must you prove it? Keep all receipts.

When it may make sense

When it probably doesn’t

An alternative is to set aside each month what the contract would cost in a repair fund.

A note if you buy from a dealer

According to the FTC, if you buy a service contract from the dealer within 90 days of buying the used car, the dealer can’t remove implied warranties on the systems the contract covers.

Watch out for scams

The FTC warns about calls, texts or letters saying “your warranty is about to expire”, with urgent, official-looking language. Many of these companies imply they represent the manufacturer or dealer. If you’re interested in a contract, seek it out yourself, compare, and read everything before paying.

Frequently asked questions

Do I have to buy an extended warranty to get the loan?

Generally it's not a requirement and you can decline it. If you're told it's mandatory, ask for that in writing and compare with other lenders.

I keep getting calls saying "my warranty is expiring" — is that real?

Often it's a scam. The FTC warns about urgent calls, texts or letters that seem to come from the manufacturer or dealer. Don't give out information or pay over the phone.
